For example, it can form precipitates with lead ions , mercury ions , etc. By adjusting the pH value of the water, the reaction between LaCl3 and heavy metal ions can be promoted, converting soluble heavy metal ions into insoluble metal hydroxides or lanthanum - metal complexes, which are then removed by filtration or sedimentation, reducing the concentration of heavy metal ions in water and making the water meet the relevant quality standards.In water, phosphate is a key factor causing eutrophication. LaCl3 can react with phosphate ions to form insoluble lanthanum phosphate ,thus controlling the growth of algae and other aquatic organisms and preventing water eutrophication.
